Six Inch – Melancholic Whisper Of Life (Da Records, 2013) di Fab Ippoliti

I Six Inch si presentano al pubblico con un impatto molto caldo dal punto di vista sonoro, con una fedeltà notevole: mi è piaciuto particolarmente il sound e la produzione eccelsa che riescono ad avvolgere sin dai primi secondi di questo Melancholic Whisper Of Life. Hanno un’estrazione molto metal e si sente, questi Finlandesi. E questo giova di molto alla riuscita del debut di questi 6 giovani. Formazione quindi pienissima (Andy Voce, Pinja al Violino, Dey e Kalle alle chitarre,  Risto al basso, Mikko alla batteria e Nestori alle tastiere) con un violino che sottolinea e aiuta a dare all’atmosfera già molto gothic dei Six Inch una marcia in più. La Finlandia non è nuova a formazioni del genere… Credo che si potrebbe iniziare un’analisi sociogeografica del tessuto musicale molto interessante, ma visti gli sbadigli che già si sono scatenati con queste parole credo sia più spot on procedere con l’analisi di questo disco che di nei ne presenta pochi… Effettivamente a me una cosa non è proprio andata a genio: la voce di Andy Moisio. Una timbrica davvero poco aggraziata, nasale e grezza che però risulta efficace e dannatamente convincente quando utilizza toni più aggressivi come in Freakshow, ad esempio. Nel complesso, strumentalmente, il disco è un metal riuscitissimo con punti di pathos (My Beloved), trascinamento (l’opener Anything conquista veramente al primo ascolto), ritmiche incastrate e aperture (Whore of The Medical Science). Il problema purtroppo è provare a resistere quando il buon Andy si lancia nel tentativo di cantare melodicamente, i risultati sono un punto veramente a sfavore per questo platter che ha molte frecce nel suo arco, una voce che purtroppo a lungo andare risulta non solo sgraziata ma anche un po’ monotona avendo dei limiti espressivi ben evidenti e non potendoci fare un granché, anche se gli va dato adito che le prova tutte, anche con filtri vocali. Se siete fan del filone finlandese questo disco lo gradirete, il violino di Pinja non resta nelle retrovie ma si integra alla perfezione nel viaggiare con gli altri strumenti, non manca aggressività e sensibilità e questo Melancholic Whisper Of Life risulta essere un bel compendio dei suoni dalle terre fredde. Provatelo, vi potrà senz’altro piacere!

Six Inch introduce themselves to the audience with a very warm impact in terms of sound, with a remarkable fidelity: I really dig the sound and excellent total production that successfully hugs the listener from the very first seconds of Melancholic Whisper Of Life. Six Inch tastefully carry a strong metal soul and it shows…
And the clean, powerful, warm but defined sound is a fundamental component to manifest the notable ideas of the debut of these 6 folks. Andy’s Voice, Pinja’s Violin, Dey and Kalle on guitars, Risto on bass, Mikko beyond the drums and Nestor on keyboards blends very well with the nice violin play that emphatie the already very gothic atmosphere of Six Inch. Finland is not new to breed formations of this kind, I guess we could start an sociogeographical analysis of the worldwide musical fabric that would be pretty interesting, but given that yawning already have flared like fireworks after these words, then I guess it’s more spot on proceeding with the analysis of this album… Actually through all the proposition of the six folks I just could not get really into one thing: Andy Moisio’s singing. Andy’s weak point turns out to be the not so much graceful clean timbre, too much nasal and rough, but shows its actual effectiveness and prowess when used on more aggressive tones such in songs as Freakshow, for example…

Overall, instrumentally, Melanchonic Whisper Of Life is a pedal to the metal album that could easily fit a more aggressive genre than gothic… It refinedly delivers pathos highlights (as in My Beloved) passion (as in the opener Anything, really wins the race at the first listening), thorough rhythmics and embedded apertures (Whore of the Medical Science). The problem, sadly, is to trying and resist when the good Andy aims in an attempt to sing melodically, the results are really against themselves and that’s a pity because this platter hides very much up on its sleeve, his voice unfortunately get out awkward and a little bit boring due to evident expression limits, when eventually the song may have needed to pull out more charm and enthrall, and even the voice filters that try and help do not save the results.
If you’re a fan of the genre this album will get really through, I think that Pinja’s violin work is among the remarkable points of interest (it does not backs up the other instruments, it integrates in a perfect and functional form and can be heard all through, never in a background sense) Melancholic Whisper Of Life does not lack aggressiveness or sensibility and turns out to be a nice compendium of the sounds coming from those cold lands.
